Aston Villa Round-Up, Sunday 18th October: Manzambi the Matchwinner as Villa Beat Newcastle

Aston Villa fans have plenty to smile about this evening after a fine win over Newcastle United, with manager Unai Emery simply delighted with the result, describing the victory as "fantastic" (AVFC.co.uk).

The headline act was Johan Manzambi, who scored the winning goal against the very club he turned down in order to join Villa Park, a timely reminder to Newcastle of what they missed out on (BBC Sport). BirminghamLive's talking points from the game also touched on how Villa's transfer business appears to be paying off, with the club's dealings looking shrewd compared to mistakes made elsewhere, including by Manchester United (Birmingham Live).

There was a slightly nervy moment when Manzambi was substituted during the game, but he has since moved to reassure supporters with an injury update, easing fears over the knock (Sports Mole) (Birmingham Live).

Away from matters on the pitch, former Villa favourite Emi Martinez has been in the news after undergoing surgery on a fractured jaw following a collision during Chelsea's win over Everton. The Argentine goalkeeper posted a statement from his hospital bed following the procedure (Birmingham Live), and has since received messages of support from a number of his old Aston Villa teammates (Birmingham Live).

In a sobering reminder of events away from football, BirminghamLive reported that a Aston Villa fan, Bobby Edmundson, 52, has been jailed after stabbing another supporter 18 times following celebrations at a city centre bus parade (Birmingham Live).
