Aston Villa Round-Up, Friday 23rd October 2026: Emery Optimism Grows as Man City Test Looms
Friday brought plenty of Manchester City build-up as Aston Villa prepare for their big Premier League test, with Unai Emery's reign very much the centre of attention on the fourth anniversary of his appointment. BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty says Emery's "2.0 reboot" has restored real optimism among Villa supporters heading into the game (BBC Sport).
John McGinn marked the anniversary by saying he hopes Emery stays at Villa Park for at least another four years, joking that he's enjoying the ride before "someone tries to nab him off us" (Birmingham Live). It's a clear show of faith from the midfielder as the club looks to keep building under their manager.
Team news dominates ahead of kick-off. Emery gave a fitness update on Johan Manzambi, with Birmingham Live reporting on the decision the Villa boss has made regarding the midfielder's availability for the City clash (Birmingham Live). More broadly, Emery spoke to the media about injuries, touched on Manchester City's rule-breaking case, and delivered what's being described as a Villa "message" ahead of the weekend (Birmingham Live).
With selection headaches to solve, Birmingham Live have had a go at predicting Villa's starting XI, flagging an option in goal involving Alysson and a question mark over Manzambi's fitness as the key dilemmas facing Emery (Birmingham Live).
Elsewhere, the Guardian's weekend preview of the wider Premier League round touched on several talking points across the division, though Villa were not a central feature of that piece (The Guardian). Fans wanting more build-up can also check out the matchday programme preview for the Man City game on the official club website (AVFC.co.uk), while the club's main site continues to serve as the hub for all the latest Villa news and information (AVFC.co.uk).
All eyes now turn to Villa Park as Emery looks to use the anniversary momentum to spring a result against Manchester City.
