Aston Villa v Viking FK live: score, updates and line-ups

Full time: Aston Villa 3-1 Viking FK. A dominant display built on Barkley's early header, Buendía's first-half penalty and Heggheim's unfortunate own goal put Villa firmly in control, and despite Christiansen pulling one back late on after a VAR review, there was never any real doubt about the outcome. The hosts finished well on top across the board - 21 shots to 10, and 10 on target to Viking's three - rounding off a comfortable European night at Villa Park.

Villa have made wholesale changes but kept control, with Garnacho going closest to a fourth - denied by Østbø before dragging another narrowly wide. Viking's Bell tested the Villa defence with a blocked effort, but the big moment came at the other end of the game: a VAR check for a possible Askildsen goal, which after review is not awarded, leaving it 3-0 as we approach the closing stages.

Heggheim turns into his own net under pressure and it's 3-0 - a cruel way for Viking to fall further behind after they'd briefly found their feet. Villa barely had to lift a finger for that one and continue to pour forward, with Jackson twice going close since.

Viking have come out with more purpose after the break, finally getting shots away through Tripic, Moi (twice) and winning a string of corners, but Suzuki's save and Villa's bodies in the box have kept the scoreline at 2-0. It's a more even period territorially, though Villa still lead comfortably on the overall numbers and look comfortable holding their two-goal cushion.

Buendía makes no mistake from the spot after Alysson was brought down in the box, and Villa are cruising. It's been a totally one-sided half - 13 shots to none, 70% possession - and Viking look completely overwhelmed at Villa Park.

Villa are pouring forward now - Barkley's header has been followed by further chances for Mbaye and Alysson, both denied by Østbø, who's having to work hard to keep Viking in it. The visitors still haven't had a single shot and are leaning heavily on fouls to stem the tide.

Villa have dominated the opening quarter, holding nearly two-thirds of possession and testing Østbø twice already through Jackson's headers, both well held by the Viking keeper. Viking haven't managed a shot of their own and have resorted to fouling to break up Villa's rhythm, with Bell, Christiansen, Moi and Askildsen all pulled up for free kicks. A stoppage for treatment to João Gomes was the only real break in Villa's pressure.
