Carragher tells Villa fans to 'shut up' over Emery to Man Utd talk
Jamie Carragher has found himself at the centre of a row with Aston Villa supporters after doubling down on his suggestion that Unai Emery would be the ideal man to take charge at Manchester United.
The Mirror reports that Carragher told Villa fans to "shut the f*** up" after facing a backlash for floating Emery's name in connection with Old Trafford (Mirror). Birmingham Live carries much the same line, saying Carragher doubled down on his Emery to Man Utd comments after "copping criticism" from the Villa faithful (Birmingham Live).
Football365 frames it slightly differently, focusing on Carragher's claim that Manchester United would simply "take" Emery if they decided they wanted him, suggesting the pundit sees little that could stand in the way if United came calling (Football365).
All three outlets agree on the thrust of the story: Carragher has been vocal in talking up Emery as a candidate for the Manchester United job, Villa fans have reacted angrily to the idea of their manager being linked elsewhere, and Carragher has responded with some choice words rather than backing down.
For Villa supporters, the obvious concern is any suggestion that Emery's head could be turned, given the job he has done in transforming the club's fortunes. None of the reports suggest Emery himself has commented on the speculation, nor is there anything concrete from Manchester United - this remains pundit talk rather than anything approaching an official approach.
With Villa due to host Fulham at Villa Park on Saturday, fans will hope talk like this stays just that - talk - and that the focus returns to matters on the pitch rather than speculation over their manager's future.
