Aston Villa Morning Round-Up, Wednesday 4th November 2026: Villa Humbled 3-0 by Barcelona in the Champions League
Morning Villans. It was a rough night in Catalonia as Aston Villa's perfect Champions League start came to an end with a 3-0 defeat to Barcelona at the Nou Camp, with Raphinha grabbing a double and Lamine Yamal making history for the hosts (ESPN) (Sky Sports) (Sports Mole) (Sky Sports) (ESPN).
Birmingham Live's player ratings made for tough reading, with some Villa players handed scores of just 4 and 5 out of 10 as Unai Emery's side were well beaten on the night (Birmingham Live). Sports Mole described it as Barcelona simply blowing the Villans away (Sports Mole), while coverage of the game noted mistakes and missed chances were costly, including a moment Emery had to explain involving Joao Gomes (Birmingham Live).
Unai Emery was honest in his post-match reaction, admitting his side have "work to do" to reach Barcelona's level, while also trying to take some positives from the trip (BBC Sport). He went further elsewhere, suggesting the result was "more than we deserved" on the night in the Champions League (Villa News). John McGinn echoed the manager's tone, calling it a learning curve for the squad after the loss (Sports Mole) (Birmingham Live), while ESPN reported there remain a "lot of things to learn" following the defeat in Barcelona (ESPN).
Away from the result itself, there was a touching moment as Raphinha was praised for an emotional tribute to Jesus de Miguel during the Barcelona clash, a classy gesture that didn't go unnoticed amid the Camp Nou drama (GiveMeSport).
